Zebra label printers are all through Brisbane warehouses, dispatch benches, front counters and pharmacies, from ZT industrial printers that run all day to ZD, GK and GX desktop printers beside a computer. When one stops, orders stop. We service them on site, casual or on a service agreement.
Zebra printers print with heat, either straight onto direct thermal labels or through a ribbon onto thermal transfer labels. Most Zebra faults we are called to in Brisbane come down to the printhead, the platen roller, the media sensor and its calibration, or the ribbon path. The sections below set out what each one does when it starts to go, in the terms your printer uses.
The Zebra machines we repair in Brisbane
ZT series.
Industrial printers for warehouses and dispatch that run all day. Printheads and platen rollers wear with the labels run through them, and a worn roller shows up as crooked or slipping labels.
ZD series.
Compact printers for dispatch benches, front counters and pharmacies. Printhead wear, calibration after a change of label stock, and USB or network set up make up most of the work.
GK and GX series.
The earlier desktop range, still printing in plenty of businesses. Repairable while parts last, and we will tell you plainly when one is not worth it.
What goes wrong on a Zebra, in Zebra's terms
Faint print, white lines running along the label, or barcodes that will not scan. The printhead is the part that wears most. HEAD TOO HOT and HEAD COLD both point to the printhead or its connection.
The rubber roller under the printhead that drives the labels through. When it wears or picks up adhesive, labels feed crooked, slip, or stop lining up with the print.
Printers that skip labels, stop part way, or print across the gap after a change of label stock. Usually a calibration, sometimes a dirty or failed sensor.
On thermal transfer printers: RIBBON OUT when there is ribbon in, and ribbon that creases or wrinkles across the label.
Labels that jam in the cutter or do not cut cleanly, most often from adhesive building up on the blade.
Label printers that drop off the network, lose their driver settings, or print the wrong size after an update.
Zebra error codes we are called to
Quote the code on the panel when you book. It tells the technician which part of the machine to look at, and which parts to bring.
| Code | What it points to |
|---|---|
| HEAD OPEN | The printhead is not closed and latched. Close it firmly; if the message stays, the latch or its sensor needs attention. |
| MEDIA OUT or PAPER OUT | The labels have run out, or the media sensor cannot see them. |
| RIBBON OUT | The ribbon has run out, is not loaded, or is not being seen by the ribbon sensor. |
| RIBBON IN | A ribbon is loaded while the printer is set for direct thermal labels, which need none. |
| HEAD TOO HOT and HEAD COLD | The printhead is outside its working temperature. Repeats point to the printhead or its cable. |
| OUT OF MEMORY | The printer has no room for the label format or graphic it was sent. |

Common questions
Can I clear a Zebra alert myself?
Often. HEAD OPEN, MEDIA OUT, PAPER OUT and RIBBON OUT usually mean the printhead is not latched, or the labels or ribbon have run out or are not loaded properly, and reloading clears them. A cutter that keeps jamming, and HEAD TOO HOT or HEAD COLD that will not go away, need a technician. Book a call and tell us exactly what the screen or lights show.
Why are my labels printing faint or with white lines?
Usually the printhead. A dirty printhead can be cleaned as the user guide shows. If the white lines stay after a clean, parts of the printhead have worn out and it needs replacing, which is one of the most common Zebra repairs we do.
Why does my Zebra skip labels or print across the gap?
The printer has lost track of where each label starts, most often after a change of label stock. A media calibration usually fixes it. If it keeps happening after a calibration, the media sensor may need cleaning or replacing.
Is an older Zebra worth repairing?
Often, because the parts that wear, the printhead and the platen roller, can be replaced. If a repair would cost more than the printer is worth to you, we will say so before any work goes ahead.
