What goes wrong on a Lexmark, in Lexmark's terms
The 80 Replace maintenance kit message. The kit is a new fuser, transfer roller, pick roller and separation roller, fitted together. Early 80 messages are warnings; when the fuser reaches its rated life the printer stops until the kit goes in.
The 121 codes for temperature and thermistor faults, and 120 for the fuser drive motor. A fuser fault stops the printer for safety, and it is usually the fuser itself, sometimes its wiring or the mains supply.
The 84 imaging unit messages, 31.6x smart chip errors, and the 133 toner level sensing codes. Faint, grey or streaky pages usually start here.
The 111 codes. The laser printhead has a spinning mirror motor, and when it will not lock to speed or its cable works loose, the printer stops before it prints.
Jams in the 24x range from worn pick tires and separator rolls, 241.29 to 245.29 when a tray will not finish lifting, and the 3xx codes for the motors in the optional 250 and 550 sheet trays and the high capacity input tray.
Originals that skew, double feed or stop in the ADF, shown as 282 to 295, usually come down to the ADF separator roller or the ADF maintenance kit. The 84x codes cover the scanner carriage, the ADF elevator tray and the scanner boards.
The 4xx codes for jams and motor faults in the output options, and staple faults in the 456 range.
The 9xx family, including the well known 900.xx system software error, settings memory faults, and network port errors. Scan to email and to folders, SMTP changes when your mail provider moves, and firmware updates through the printer's own web page.

Quote the code on the panel when you book. It tells the technician which part of the machine to look at, and which parts to bring.

Common questions
Can I clear a Lexmark error code myself?
Some of them. Lexmark calls a restart a power on reset, and it clears many software and communication codes, such as 900.xx, 912.xx and 952.xx. Jams clear once the paper is out of the area the panel shows. Fuser codes in the 121 range, and codes pointing at a part, will come back until the cause is fixed. If a code returns after a restart, book a call and quote all the digits, including the ones after the point.
What does 80 Replace maintenance kit mean on a Lexmark?
The fuser maintenance kit is due. Lexmark counts pages and asks for a new fuser, transfer roller, pick roller and separation roller together. The early messages are warnings. Once the fuser reaches its rated life the printer stops until the kit is fitted, so it is best booked in when the first warning appears.
Do you look after fleets of Lexmark printers?

Is an older Lexmark worth repairing?
