- The message on the screen word for word, such as Replace Drum, Drum Error or Jam Inside.
- The model, such as MFC-L8690CDW or HL-L5100DN. Brother sells dozens of similar models and the parts differ.
- Whether scanning to email or to a network folder has stopped. On a Brother that is often a settings change, not a part.

Common questions
Why does my Brother still say Replace Drum after a new drum?
The drum counter has to be reset when a new drum goes in, and on some models the reset is in a menu rather than automatic. If the message stays after a reset, the drum contacts or the drum itself need a look.
Is a Brother laser worth repairing?
For the business models, usually. An MFC or HL that has printed well for years most often needs a fuser, a paper feed kit or a drum, not a replacement printer. We tell you before any work if a repair would cost more than it is worth to you.
